Hi fellow DotA players, I need your help with my dissertation. in General Discussion

    Hi guys, I'm a Bachelors student at Coventry University studying Computer Science, currently doing my final year project, which I'm writing on the effects of age/gender on the ability to interact with computers in a gaming environment. I'm using DotA because I've been playing this game for 3 years and know enough about it to be able to fill the potholes in my research. Also because it's a pretty complex game, so variation in ability is gonna be more measurable.

    The survey link is here; https://www.esurveycreator.co.uk/s/7b6618f

    You'll need to know your Steam ID, Age, Gender and your Avg. Ping. You'll also need to tick "Expose Public Match Data" in game options. IMPORTANT: If you have "Auto-repeat Right Mouse" enabled in your settings, I won't be able to use your data. So check that before you submit the survey please!

    Some quick stats;

    100% of our top tier players are male.

    ~77% of our current top tier players are under the age of 25.

    These stats are pretty consistent across Esports as a whole, and this was my inspiration to measure if there's any difference in ability as we age, or depending on our gender. Otherwise, if there are more complicated/social reasons as to why we have such bad representation in our community.

    This is where I need you guys. The survey is tiny, I'm doing most of the data collection myself. It'll take 5 minutes. Pay attention to the tooltips, they explain more detail about the data I'm collecting. This is fully anonymous, the only 'personal' data I want is your Steam ID, but I won't be looking at your account so if your name is on there I'll never see it. Even if I do by some accident see your name/location, I will not record it anywhere. It's irrelevant to what I'm studying.

    I can't yet tell you my method, simple reason being; people lie. If I told you how I was measuring skill and what the criteria were for me to include your data, you might skew your answers to make me include them. Which will screw with my results a lot. When I finish the research (before May) and submit it I'll report back with my findings and give full details on my method then. Promise!

    Thanks in advance for everyone who participates, and if you could share the link with your DotA playing friends as much as possible that would be appreciated!

      My ability and performance in Dota drastically decreased after the age of 25 for the simple reason that my career started taking most of my daily focus and energy, and games played were only during leisure hours -- As opposed to dedicating a lot of energy and focus on the daily, and performing during my functioning hours of my high energy.

      I haven't looked at the survey yet, but occupation may be an important metric.

        moon, you're right! It may be. Thing is, I'm a computer science student and not a sociology student. Just because a computer is involved doesn't mean I can focus solely on social aspects to carry out this study. So what I'm doing is measuring ability using data already available to me from people who choose to participate, and asking a couple of follow up questions about social aspects, which are at the end of the survey. One of those questions is about the viability of professional gaming as a long term career, which someone who is 16 might see as a perfect job, but someone like you over the age 25, you might view it as more of a dream, not really a goal.

        My point is, I'm not just reporting raw data at the end of this project. I'm encouraging people who participate to tell me a little more about their thoughts of Esports and I will be considering that in how I report my findings, especially if I notice any patterns in people's experience.
