it depends on internet connection as well.

I tried playing with 15 to 30 ping on sea its like my weights on my feet were removed my hero played like its on steroids LOL. Hoping for a real LAN option soon.
you guys are so fucking lucky to play under 100 ms ping, you dont understand how its like to play with 130 ms ping and then it spikes to 300 or whatever because god fucking hates you irl
fml i could outplay literally anyone with awful heroes if i had such a low ping

US East - 100ms++, played only once

You have a problem believing him chimney? I have no idea why you have such latency in sweden.
South Poland
Eu East&West - 60ms
Russia - 80ms
US East - 80-120ms (usually lower; sometimes people argue when they're winning, not when losing :)
US West - 150ms
i hope you know that at least half of the pings here are complete bullshit and impossible
you don't have 120 from UK to SEA and you don't have ~90 to US West from anywhere in Europe
btw the netgraph ping is not actually your real ping
because i'm not somalian, thats why i don't get the good stuff in my country.
anyway, he's lying about his pings.
typical brony shit
@Fuck the zero
I lived in germany a year ago and played on US E/W servers every morning and I had a ping of ~100 and there was no difference to European servers
Now I live in sweden
US East 210
US West 270
Stockholm 100
Australia 400
South Africa 270
you shouldve specified whether you want pings from the -ping command, from the net graph, or from console
because those are 3 different values
We don't all sit in dirt huts you know, some of us pay large amounts of money to get the best out of technology.
Local Connection http://www.speedtest.net/result/2944470731.png
VPN for US http://www.speedtest.net/result/2944224810.png
i dont think you know how vpns work
the ping you're getting is the one between your vpn and the game server (if you're actually using the right ping) and thus not accounting for the delay between the vpn and you
I have a full competent understanding of how a gateway VPN works and your continual effort to call out people on this topic won't work on me.
ya and still you actually think you could have 120 ms to the sea server from eu
how could i question your knowledge after that one
or 63 ms to US west
Location: India, Speed: 1 Mbps
Sea: 90-160
SA: 300+
China: 200+
Eu East: 350+
Us East: 350+
Didnt have the guts to check out other servers.
63ms as a minimum not as a stable number, stable ping was more around 80.
120ms as a low to a maximum high as much as 500+ in a single game sitting.
I quite frankly don't care if people question knowledge but constantly finding reason to question without cause is just not necessary.
@chimney
You asked for speedtest results and I provided them and a demeaning comeback is just off. I pay quite a lot of money for a good connection, a crazy good PC and all the other gadgets I own. Assuming I am a lier because you aren't used to having good pings, or a good PC or anything of the kind doesn't mean that there aren't people out there who do.
TL:DR Not a brony, you're stupid, go do one asscannon.
if you actually knew how vpns work you'd actually know that the numbers you've posted are completely meaningless
you could live anywhere in the world and connect to a VPN in Seattle and have ~0 ms on US west
so you posted pointless numbers and get upset that you get called out for it
Norway
EU west~80 (60 sometimes)
US east~150
russia ~45 (better individual level, crappy teammates!... better to play with bots!-->and they are stupid players too (think they are playing vs bots xD))
Thanks to everyone for helping.
@Swiftending ...thanks for clarifying that. I was just looking for the in-game -ping command that everybody uses. I had hoped that this would encourage people to be aware of which nearby regions they could play and get a reasonable game.
Some people seem to think they can only play 1 region, but hopefully most people can at least play the neighboring regions easily. For instance my last 3 games on EUwest the ping did not seem to be a problem for me at all.

Actually based on what you have just said in your last comment I am 100% sure you have zero clue what you are talking about and are making statements based on quick Google searches to try and make some long worded comments on a topic you have no knowledge or expertise in.
The numbers I have posted weren't actually done without a gateway as about 1 month prior people mentioned that Valve considered this a ban able offense so I haven't played on US servers since.

There are a few things I would like to see.
[1] Some people are just unaware that you can get good pings to other regions. I want to encourage more dota play between regions.
[2] I had earlier noticed that some people have much better pings than others in the same game from the same region and I would like to get some ideas on why that might happen. In particular how much better can it be with superior gear? Is is possible to get equipment that really makes a difference?
[3] Are pings between regions symmetrical? I have seen some evidence before that they are not. I wonder why this is and if it might make sense to always play a mixed region stack on one server over the other.
On receiving it seems like EU East is the central most stable connection point with most people being able to comfortable connect at playable speeds. This is based on what people have posted and also from experience from friends connecting from the US and SEA.
SEA Servers seem unplayable unless they open a hub in Hong Kong which will have crazy good ping.
if only you could share your knowledge with professional players and teams on how to actually play on us west with 60 ping from eu and vice versa
oh wait I'm fucking clueless
Both people from Poland reported good pings to US servers sometimes. I was really surprised how low my ping is to Russia. But it has been like that consistently. I think you just have to try these things out and see what happens. If you don't want to risk a real game you could do a co-op bot game to check in-game pings and get a feel for what it would be like to play on that server.
My ping to USE is 180-200 in console and 120-130 on the -ping command so if you could share your ''40 ms overseas ping'' secrets I'd be glad to hear
@ Relentles:
Its really different from each provider, theres no way you can tell that some people in a region will have a better ping than others. Many people think that its all about bandwidth, which is not true at all. Some provider want to offer errorfree packages which are being sendt and recieved, which causes a higher ping. I know countless german people with a 16mbit/2mbit internet connection and yet still have a ping of 50ms on german servers, while others only have 2mbit/512kbit and are playing with 10ms.
Im living in Denmark, which is a part of scandinavia, its pretty common that people from scandinavia have really fast internet connections, since almost everyone has fibreinternet, but that doesnt mean that everyone has fast internet.
What in comes down to is the provider, nothing else. I saw some years ago, that some german provider acually offer something called 'fastpath', which basicly did cost like 1Euro more per month. When they activated fastpath, their ping went from 50ms to 15ms, im not sure if something like that exists in other countries though.
Also you could optimize some netsettings via console, which would prolly make your ping like 2-3ms faster, which is not really worth mentioning.
@ Havok Badger:
I strongly suggest that you might want check your connection or PC, your pingfluxuation is extremely high (+-30ms is extreme). My Ping goes like +-2 and im usually using youtube and other stuff on a 15/2mbit connection.
^
jesus fucking christ, what kind of internet are you guys on? If my ping went +-20ms i would fucking start to break my router.
The secret lies in spending $80 a month on a connection worth having. Also my pings to SEA are worse then some of their connecting here so only good areas for me are US and EU currently with maybe delayed play on an SEA server.
Wow my Internet must be shit as hell. Im playin with 60-90ms on a day. On a shit day, it goes from 100-200 and all the way to 1k when my flat mates wakes up and watch porn. All these while playing in aus region. The only region i can play in.
so the secret is to pay $80 and god willingly flies down to your house to upgrade your infrastructure for free (let's deny the fact that upgrading from adsl to fiber can cost up to 1800 euros) and then you will unlock the secret to playing on low ping over sea?
my god, it sounds too good to be true
My in game pings tend to vary within a range of 20. That seems to be the case on any of the servers...although USeast is more consistent.
I also tend to get tons of lag spikes during lighting storms, but that does not seem to change the pings that are reported.
AS long as the cables are laid in your area the installation shouldn't cost more than a regular initial ADSL installation. Mine was about £90 installation then £50 a month for the 150MB so I guess its not so bad.
The only companies I have used that are cable based are BT Infinity, Virgin Media, Time Warner (US) and they all have connections ranging from 60-120MB for not that much money.
@chimney:
Not true at all. In denmark there is fibre internet all over the place, you do not pay for the fibre installation. My mother lives in a small village with 135 people and she has 50/50mbit internet connection there. So in denmark fibreinternet is not something expensive, i doubt that it costs alot for other people in other countries aswell, maybe your country is just shitty when it comes to internet.
Im still amazed how shitty internet some people acually have, first of all the price for a 100/100mbit connection for havok, then the shitty perfomance. Im really suprised, i mean CMON, not even 100/100mbit, pingspikes and the questionable ping.
Havok: 100/100mbit (only gets like 80s/70s), ping is like 15~ (while gaming huge spikes), pays 80 pounds, which is like 120dollars or so)
My mothers internet: 50/50mbit (gets 52/54mbit, ping is ~5 (gaming max spike is 1ms), pays 50dollars, which is less than half.
My Internet: (ADSL, 15/2, getting 14,8mbit/2,03mbit, ping is ~10(while gaming max spike 2ms), paying 9,5Dollars
Basicly even my old ass cheap connection is better than the 120Dollar connection from havok, when it comes to gaming, im rly fucking shocked.

Oh kid, your so cute. Go play with your toys instead of sitting in front of the PC, mommy would be happy.
Actually your connection sadly is nowhere as good as mine. To get an accurate count on pings you can just load one game for a second check the ping then log out. Pings fluctuate from time of day, server load and updates/bug fixes etc.
Sitting anywhere in 40-10ms is more than overly playable and getting slightly better ms on a server doesn't derive a better connection but rather latency due possible to sitting physically closer to a servers location. There is possibly even plateau for how good a connection you can achieve to any one location and keep in mind there is no way in hell I would pay so much for a connection if I wasn't sure I would be getting my moneys worth and also wouldn't have gotten it solely for the purpose of playing games.
Keep in mind that most ADSL connections go unchecked and uncapped with one of the biggest issues to cable connections being that they are heavily monitored and you run the risk of caps under certain load balancing proxies.
TL:DR Different kind of connections work different, my pings are 100% stable, pings done from http://tinyurl.com/khxoqs5
