I wish I had known about it before, but it looks like most people still don't. 17K players is a lot but nowhere near the 100K+ players I imagine would be interested.
Also the Player sign-up just started. Only completed teams were signing up before. And and and I found a forum post where they hope to implement a solo-que option soon. The only problem is the mass of players is still fairly small so wait times for ranked games are a lot longer than normal. But I hope that will change as more people join.
This could synergize with dotabuff stats really well since all ten in these games would likely have stats set to public.

I just learned that DotaBro has got exactly what I and I think may others here wanted. They have a system up and running for finding players to make your team and play ranked games against other teams of all skill levels. Europe, US, and Asia are up so far.
The ladder season has the top 16 pub teams play a tournament with casters on 2 min delay. The first season already ended and El Pride won the $1000 prize. The next season is underway.
You can submit a player profile and look for a team or search players to be on your team. I see so many posts here looking for people to play with and Dotabro has a system set up to do it.
This is all very new. The player database just started taking submissions 2 days ago. If this snowballs into a site with lots of people involved it should be exactly what competitive pub players are looking for. No need to wait for Valve time!
Over 1100 teams have joined so far. I'm very excited to see it develop.
